I think the REALLY old fashioned phones, where you turn a crank to ring the
operator, were compatible with the later ringing phones, in terms of
voltage.  So, if you had one of those, you make another phone ring by just
wiring them together.  

However, I only recall seeing the regular crank phones with separate mic's
and speakers. But, I vaguely recall seeing WW2 era field phones in a movie
that had a single hand-set, and also used a crank to ring the other phone.
