Sounds like my week!
I just had a consultant who's worked with me on and off for a LONG time
just ask if I had any abilities with motor speed controls. Figured he
was going to come up with some warp-drive motor I'd never seen before
that needed control. Turns out the product will have a small brushless
DC motor and he needs rough speed control. I was waiting for the
punchline but he was serious, he thinks controlling something the size
of a fan on a computer will require a complex board. If I was less
honest I'd design one for him using FPGAs, multiple processors, etc.
But, I gave him the secret of a PWM waveform from whatever processor is
on his board.
