I did that very thing last year for "Caesar" - flaming trash can.
Battery powered - DMX controlled. I built it myself - see attached
pics. Not the prettiest - the ugliest bit was the 'snoot' made from a
plastic paint pail. A pic of it onstage here:

I used a high volume/low velocity muffin fan, but needed the 'snoot'
to better direct the air to the flames. The flames were finicky - did
a lot of trial-and-error to get the silks to flutter sufficiently, and
randomly. Different sizes/lengths will give you a floppy mess, or a
perfectly-oscillating flickering (not convincing) - so if you go this
route, plan on playing with it a lot. The bulbs were LED versions of
MR16s (12v) - fan was 12v, battery was lead-acid 12v, dimming/control
was through a DMX-capable PWM controller (mounted on the
underside).... which was controlled by an Elation Pro W-DMX unit I
happened to have.
