Is there such a beast?  Back before digital TV I could put a compressor
in the audio line and tweak levels if needed.  Now there's no access to
the audio and some movies are so quiet we can't hear them with the
volume all the way up.

If this exists then the only other thing would be a way to get the
^%$%#@! audio to sync up on some videos.  Seems we've taken a few steps
back with the way compression has been implemented.
