[SML] Backer rod with a wire in it?

Hey folks... is there such a goody as something like backer rod with
wire in it, to shape into free-form shapes, and then hold the shape?
(Think pipe cleaners, but instead of chenille, it's foam backer rod.)

I feel like I've seen/used something like that, but clearly my
Google-fu won't work if I can't name it.

Used for puppet/maquette armatures, maybe?  Sure feel like something's
out there....
