[SML] Moving light funkiness

Dear Brain Trust:
I have an aging Mac2k that's driving me batty.
It powers on and homes fine. Without striking the lamp, I can control
it fully.
As soon as I strike the lamp it throws a lamp error, pan error, tilt
error, pretty much every error available.
If I fly the batten in, and remove the covers, it will strike and
operate normally. But striking it with the covers on yields every error
in the book.
I've looked, there doesn't appear to be anything on the cover sticking
into a sensor. (Then again, I can't see inside when the cover is on.)
Any thoughts?
Steve L.
