To clarify some on what people have already said, in general:
- Greenware is unfired clay, it's essentially dried mud. When it is dropped, it tends to smush somewhat, and turn in to powder. Pieces won't fly all over the stage, but it also won't sound like pottery breaking.
- Bisque has been fired once. When it is dropped, it tends to break into many distinct pieces, more like fully fired pottery. But it is still somewhat powdery. It tends to some more like real pottery breaking, but not exactly like pottery breaking.
- Pottery is bisque that has been glazed, and fired again, at a slightly higher temperature. It doesn't powder at all when dropped. It sound more like glass breaking, because the glazing is in fact melted glass.
That's a general simplification, based on my experience throwing pottery as a hobby.
