[SML] Lighting instrument Paint

Good morning!

I am spray painting several color frames and touching up a bunch of old
instruments.  I've been using Rust Oleum's (and then, the ACE store brand)
high-heat spray.  What seemed to be a no-brainer when I got started now has
me chasing my tail.  First coats aren't covering all that well and follow-up
coats result in lifting off the first coats.  For those of you who do this
sort of thing regularly, what have you found to work?
