My issue with dowsers like the one from Bakerwood is that they wipe, rather than fade.

My first experience with amazining dowsing was with Pani Projectors which used greyscale glass shutters which faded in from both sides.

When we made our own (at Cornell University, with CD trays), I copied what I'd seen done with the CMY mechanisms in StudioColors, and made 8 long pointy bits which got wider at the base, so that as they extended in front of the light from opposite sides, they blocked progressively more light across the entire field.

It took some experimentation, but the end result worked awesomely, and gave a nice even fade, even if there was an image in at the time.

That may have been my first attempt at product development... I should have sold them!

We had 4 of them and fortunately have finally replaced them with 5 Bakerwood DMX controlled ProDowsers. (prodowser.com) While they worked for many years, I'll never go back.
