It was not over the state’s right to levy, or not levy, tariffs. It was not over the state’s right mint money, It was not over the state’s right to deliver mail. It was not over any other right than the right to maintain slavery, and very importantly propagate it into the western territories. The southern states only attempted to leave the union when it seemed the more populous northern states would succeed in banning slavery from the territories. The war was about slavery and nothing, nothing else. It pulled in some gallant men to fight for the South who were against slavery or had reservations about it, like Robert E. Lee, but that didn’t change what the war was about, slavery. Slavery was the USA’s holocaust, The confederate battle flag is a symbol of the fight to support that holocaust. No state’s rights chest beating can change that. That battle flag didn’t come back to any prominence until the civil rights movement of the 1960s, a racist reaction to people fighting the horrors of Jim Crow. There is no defence for the confederate battle flag except racist white supremacist dogma. Free speech allows the flag to be displayed, only insanity allows it to represent public policy. As Jerry said, state’s rights does not have a flag.
