[SML] Dimming a 24vac load

OK, now I think I get it.

The AC source plus rectifier, together, take the place of a battery  power
source
to power the load through a DC dimmer (which is not a power source itself);
 the rectifier steers the positive and negative half cycles of the AC
so that the dimmer sees them both at the same polarity.

These DC dimmers run at high chopping frequency to avoid heating ?
