This is somewhat unjust. When I design lights for a show, each
luminaire has a purpose, but the exact levels need set by eye, and
judgement. This can only be done in rehearsals with cast, costume, and
make-up.

Once, long ago, I designed a rig which did not work. Having seen that
in an early rehearsal, I reconsidered the focus, to avoid a re-rig,
and planned a tentative set of levels, all on paper in my office. It
would have worked off the drawing board, and did with a little
trimming of levels and focus.

Some degree of ' waggling the faders' is always needed.
