I first encountered the term several years back in Jean Rosenthal's paper work for "To Broadway with Love," a 90 minute revue of the American Theatre presented at the Texas Pavilion at the 1965 New York World's Fair. They used it to refer to a runway (as in Hello Dolly) down-stage of the orchestra pit.

One "l" seems to be Portuguese and with 2 "l"s French, both meaning "bridge" or similar - gangway, catwalk, etc. Maybe. Seems that high tech has also appropriated the term, as in a network bridge.
