They used it to refer to a runway (as in Hello Dolly) down-stage of the orchestra pit.

Hey i saw that in 1964 at the fair.  As a high school student,  I thought it was very good.  Done by the same guy that directed Music Man.  
Texas Pavilion was more or less paid for by Angus Wynne….same guy that would later build Six Flags in Texas (and the two other original 6 Flags)
History lesson for this morning now over.
