[SML] split flap signs

I'd love if this conversation would remain on list.  I went deep into
a rabbit hole last year working on a design that included these.  It
got cut after some experimentation with a prototype, but I learned a
lot and remain fascinated by these things.  Please share any
discoveries you make!
