You're right about the wrinkles... but I found they don't really show up in my situation (with the audience 35' away).

I have played with the shower curtain/rear projection idea in the past.  But, I was put off by the inability to remove the wrinkles created by the folds.  

I just looked at what was available at JoAnn's Fabrics.  They have frosted vinyl on a roll, 54" wide, $2.50/yard.  I wonder if two layers of this would have enough opacity and diffusion to use for projection? Perhaps the white vinyl shower curtain can be made flat enough, that the remaining wrinkles will not show if it is placed behind a panel of this frosted vinyl.

The above is just speculation.  But, does anyone have any real-world success with eliminating the folds in the shower curtain liners?
