And if the fire originates at the coffee maker next to the door?  I
can see some things as overdone and over regulated but sufficient and
maintained means of egress is not one that should be given up.  In
almost every large loss of life fire in assembly occupancies lack of
egress played a significant role in the fatalities.  The highest fines
and worst sentences should be given to those who chain doors shut, set
up lighting and sound blocking egress, cover or disable illuminated
exit signs, and so on.
