Onondaga Lake Parkway in Syracuse has a notorious low bridge.  After four people were killed in a Megabus crash in 2010 they installed a $300,000 3 part detector system 1/2 mile from the bridge.    Only two vehicles  has hit the bridge since the system went in but the warning system has been triggered hundreds of times  
Some people just refuse to read the signs.  Of course, it also says no commercial vehicles (which in NY can mean your compact pick up. )

maybe a low hanging strike bar would help?  with a big explosion so drivers would  know it means you when you hit it?
