I've done that (before we got our Ion). It does use up submasters pretty quickly, but I only have two ML fixtures to play with. If I recall correctly, Groups on an Express can save levels proportionally. You could record the extra wash fixture channels into Groups, then manipulate by calling up those Groups and setting the levels via the touchpad. Slower than real subs, I admit, but faster than punching in individual channels. It would preserve the physical subs for other purposes. It's kind of using Groups as a variation on parameter pallets.
