For the love of god, PLEASE DON'T USE CRAP LIKE SHOE POLISH AS MAKEUP!!! Using non-makeup stuff like shoe polish or paint on skin is STUPID AND UNSAFE. You'd better not be using shoe polish or paint on children--that is especially irresponsible and egregious.

Yes, good theatre makeup is expensive, but you get what you pay for!  Suck it up and shell out some bucks for some good quality stuff and a bunch of cheap applicators (sponges, etc.) and, with proper care, it will last quite a while.  

Cut corners elsewhere on your production, but NEVER CUT CORNERS ON SAFETY. Proper makeup is safe makeup.
