I wonder if the Masonite surface was intended as a sacrificial layer
intended to be replaced at some point. If so, there may be every
likelihood that the plank flooring beneath it is in good shape. It that's
the case, then I would go for simply replacing the dead Masonite with a
suitable/similar material that is primed on both sides, well secured with a
close nailing (not screw) pattern and then repainted. If the main deck is
totally shot, then I concur with the notion of replacing with Plyron. I
would still add a sacrificial layer over it. In our situation (bearing in
mind that I'm now retired 6 years) the original yellow pine T&G flooring
from 1970 is still intact and has always (still) had a sacrificial layer of
Masonite on it. It got replaced on about a 10-year rotation after having
about 60 coats of show deck paint applied to it over the years.
I can't emphasize the importance of PRIMING ALL of the surfaces and edges
as you lay the new surface(s).
Good luck,
Steve
