[SML] Making a phone ring and it's handset speaker work on stage

Are we saying that with the proper software, an offstage phone could just call the onstage phone? 
How loud would that be? 
Isn't the real problem here that the director wants the audience to hear the 'other' end of the phone conversation, and imagines that the handset can produce that kind of volume? And clearly? 




Neat idea, but modems are FXO ports and you'd need FXS to power analog phones. 

On the other hand, asterisk with VoIP handsets or ATAs would actually work really well for this application. Something to consider in the future...

But even then, the handset speaker should not be where this sound comes from. Rather put a speaker under, or just near where the phone is. You may also need to supplement that sound with some sound from the main speakers for people further away to hear it at the proper level.
