If you are expecting the audience to hear it, you might have a problem.  If it is a small theater, I can understand if he wants the audience to sense the location where the sound is coming from.  But even then, the handset speaker should not be where this sound comes from. Rather put a speaker under, or just near where the phone is.  You may also need to supplement that sound with some sound from the main speakers for people further away to hear it at the proper level.
