I remember from my high school days running before a stout wind the
length of Sturgeon Lake in Quetico... Two 18' Sawyer Cruisers lashed
together catamaran-fashion with a paddle mast and a rain poncho for a
spinnaker....  Hardly what I'd call "flat water" - you could surf on
some of those waves, once the late-summer wind got the bit in its
teeth.
