Another way to go is to set up an OpenHab-PC. OpenHab interfaces with most
automationprotocols, both vendorspecific and industrystandard protocols. I
have it running on an Raspberry Pi 2B, but it will run on any modern day
computer. http://openhab.org

In my setup, I have it controlling heating and Milight LEDs (I guess that's
those you call crap from Alibaba), and it works reliably.
