In my experience it is a bit odd but not unheard of to have a two tone
stage.
I would suggest not going to a flat black however. It shows all dust and
dirt and is very hard to maintain if it is flat. Instead go for a satin
finish that can be easily mopped and cleaned. One of my favorites here in
the northeast is California Paints Allflor Porch and floor enamel.
