Functional difference?  No.  The 'standard' thimble is good for, ahem...standard applications and the heavy duty thimble works better in...wait for it...heavy duty situations.

Standard =  Manually operated counterweight systems.  Simple automated rigging systems.   Single speed winch systems.

Heavy Duty =  Situations where significant shock load is anticipated.  Heavy loads in locations where inspection is difficult.  High speed winch systems where an E-stop could wreak havoc.  High end, high speed performer flying.   Shipyards.  Outer space.  Submarines
