Hm, you probably meant to put the fans in the pit.

If only one plug is removed, the opening is 4 ft x 8 ft. The conductor sits on
a chair inside that area.

The get good CO2 blockage, you would want a relatively laminar air flow up
through the opening. You are not going to get anywhere close to that with a
couple of box fans anywhere close.
