I have actually done a rig like this many times for very slow moving "passage of time" effects.  45 minute sunsets, 30 minute moon box movements, etc.  Moving something slowly is often much harder than moving something quickly.  You can motorize it, but if you only need it to take 4 to 5 minutes, it's actually super easy to do with a manual system.

You can create hand crank travel system that can be geared to give you a smooth slow effect powered by a stage hand.  If you don't want to make one, I have one I can send you.
