Dear Glenn,
AURORA Borealis?  Try using the deliberate Chromatic Aberration inherent in
'coke-bottle-quality' lenses, with gel to tint where necessary; a dichroic
filter might give you purer color, but edges of the colors may be too
distinct to be useful. Just an idea...
