[SML] DIY metallic finish on polyethylene or EVA foam?

I know that many plastic objects get a metallic finish by using vacuum deposition or sputtering.  I've seen a few videos on people doing this on their own for small objects like telescope mirrors.  But, what about doing it in a stagecraft shop on vacuum formed plastic, or even EVA foam and and Polyethylene foam?  I am picturing things like pieces of armor, or a Tin-man costume.
Has anyone tried it?
