You want a cored cord (sorry...) called “Tiller Line.” It’s a cotton line,
similar to sash cord, with a metal or polyester core buried in the center
of the line, to prevent stretching. The cotton sheath gives you a good
“hand” or gripping surface. It was originally developed for controlling
boat tillers, as the name suggests, but is now pretty much universally
spec’ed for traveler use.

Any dealer selling ADC traveler track & hardware should be able to sell you
a short chunk of 1/2” tiller line, I would think.
