[SML] Eight Bells for Dick Archer

Sad news indeed.  I’d run into him a few times over the years but never worked directly with him.  A friendly curmudgeon if there ever was one.  My condolences to his family.

I’ll raise a glass of something non-alcoholic in his honor.

Hi all,
Dick Archer, Technical Director at Cornell University, mentor to many of us, and longtime contributor to the list has passed.
He was recently moved into Hospice, and surrounded by family at the time of his passing.
He had been battling liver cancer (ironic, as he never touched drugs or alcohol) for the last year and change.
Dick has been an incredible resource to many of us over the years.  He was a stagehand at Woodstock, mentored Tom Hanks (as a stagehand, not actor) at the Great Lakes Theatre, and worked as both a Professor at Cornell and freelance TD for the last several decades.

He was a sometimes curmudgeon (though never with a bit of spite), with a fantastic sense of humor who was almost world famous for his ability to mutter under his breath (somewhat like Yosemite Sam), while making himself perfectly clear.
Dick was fantastically talented, brilliant, and extremely practical.
His list of professional accomplishments are way to long to list here. But suffice it to say, he will be missed by many.
I count myself very lucky to have been his friend.

So, I propose a toast, and raise a glass of something that Dick would not drink (I prefer scotch, Dick would have milk and cookies) to a fantastic man, a friend, a mentor, a sounding board, a human encyclopedia… and someone whom I will miss very much.
