He appears to be “talent.”  Upon closer inspection there is an additional line in the first shot (the one with the jib) and a single supporting line with a shackle?  The second shot shows an old wood block and fall with an open hook which is not in the previous shot.  My guess he has a harness and safety line under his costume.  Old rigging might be added and safety gear taken out in post production.  While it looks sketchy, that is obviously the point of the shot in the film.  That is how our forefathers built the world, minus the safety gear and knowledge we have today.  This shows historically correct practice thus proving how bigger budgets can make a difference.
