Flap disks are superior to the hard depressed center grinding disks for most grinding tasks. When using the same grit for each, a flap disk will remove weld material about 50% faster than the traditional hard depressed center disk. The surface of the flap disk wears away faster than the surface of the hard disk, so there is always sharp grit on the surface. The slight flex of the flaps conforms to the surface better and results in a better blend of the weld into the surface. A slightly increased cost for the consumable results in a big labor saving. I have found 40 grit is a good compromise between speed and a surface smooth enough for a theatrical grade paint finish

The hard depressed center disks are still essential for any task that requires grinding with the edge of the wheel, like grinding into a corner

I've been pretty happy with the Makita 4 1/2" angle grinders over the years. They are inexpensive and take a while to wear out. Being able to have afford multiple grinders so you don't have to change back and forth between cutting wheel, flap disk, wire brush, etc., saves a lot of time in the shop
