[SML] Tempered Hardboard (Masonite)

Cork underlayment. There are other materials used under laminate/engineered
flooring and LVT that might work, but cork has few downsides. Around 75
cents sf material cost.

You'll need to think about how you fasten the hardboard so fasteners don't
"pop" when it compresses. I suggest considering adhesive instead of nails
or screws.
