Absolutely welcome back Dave.
I kinda feel similar to you - although my lighting design work was always
part-time. I used to work 8 hrs/day in software, then put in another 8 hrs
evenings (and weekends) working on designs and then installing, teching,
sometimes running shows, etc. But work evolved w/ lots more responsbility
and time, and I just don't have the energy for double-jobs anymore.
But - yes - I do miss the work. Sometimes I gaze achingly at a concert or
show, and re-design the lights or cues in my head. I did get backstage
with major local band last summer, shadowing the LD and board ops for a
festival gig, and loved it. I even made a list of notes to address a
number of their design issues, and busking setup (but kept them to
myself). Sigh.
