I think I found what I was recalling... the terms is "stackable beam seats".  Here is an example.https://www.maticfurniture.com.au/products/beam-seating?product_id=380&__cf_chl_tk=cnWdKGqEDBudIErh.TdPzNjTc7mMbjbw5dJ0eOJ8l6w-1733435197-1.0.1.1-gvkqqJP2i5J.4NZf.ZNZr0NPF07t8pvZO6dSNfhH5A8
There are also the type of "beam seats" that only have feet on the very ends, but the ones I've come across so far are not stackable.  Though, looking at the stackable one, I am not sure there is a large benefit to using them in our case.
Mentally, I think I can imagine a chair design that woudl be better than what I've seen. Or rather, a dispensing and stacking system.  So I am surprised I am not finding such a system online. But, perhaps they were tried, and just weren't practical, or economical.
