I started writing a response about how I didn’t mind “techie” at the high school level and below, but then I realized that what I actually didn’t mind was student self-identification as a techie at high school or below.
When I taught high school, I encouraged my students to call themselves technicians or stagehands (or any of the positions they were working) rather than “techies,” but recognized the value of camaraderie in the term. I firmly corrected any teacher or administrator called them techies. At the university level, I actively discourage any of my students from calling themselves (or allowing themselves to be called) a “techie."
The bigger red flag for me on the website is the “I can’t, it’s tech week” shirt.
