Caution:  Skill learning can be habit forming!

Once he learns how to solder a simple cable, then he might start making 
custom length cables instead of buying them ready made.

It only gets worse from there... wire junction and breakout boxes, 
specialized controls... and then, if nobody stops him he may pick up an 
Arduino!  He's doomed at that point.

I'm not fond of Arduino development software, but it has gotten better.  
But they're cheap and everywhere, I sometimes use the $2 NANO clone 
boards as parts of other projects, but I use a "real" IDE with debugger 
for them.
