[SML] Ultrasonic low fog machines

For the budget- and access-impaired on the list (we can’t easily get dry ice or liquid nitrogen, even if we wanted to), we’ve had some success making low-lying fog by pushing regular glycol fog through a heat exchanger (i.e. dryer duct coiled in a cooler full of regular water ice) with an inline fan. Not as good as machines made for the purpose, but pretty cool.

If your fog machine regularly trips your alarm system, I’d approach it as two problems – first, creating the low-lying fog to suit the show and second, finding a solution for the alarm trips – disable and fire watch, change the detector type, etc. – so that you’re not relying on atmospheric conditions to avoid stopping your performances. Helps to have a cooperative and supportive AHJ and Facilities team, which we’ve been fortunate to have.
