Hi Stephen, Kristi,
Our IT dept actually talked with a person at Vectorworks and IT still wasn't satisfied. Especially after they talked with the college lawyer who said it was nice this one person at Vectorworks said we would be ok to use it, but, what if someone from the company later says it isn't okay to use it. Just get rid of any possible liability and buy the full version. So, we are stuck, no matter what argument we have hit them with.

Getting a clarification directly from Vectorworks about this should clear things up if the school is concerned about that.
A quick look through the Vectorworks license agreement for educational use
(https://download2.vectorworks.net/www_misc/licenses/EULA_EDUCATIONAL.html)
doesn't mention anything about whether shows are paid or free. The closest thing I could find was:
"1.6 TERMS COMMON TO ALL LICENSES"
"The Licensee may not:"
"d. Use the software for any commercial or for-hire purpose, except for use of the software by enrolled students as part of a bona fide internship or apprenticeship program approved by Licensee."
Meaning, you can't use it for outside projects that aren't a part of the school, *and* make a paycheck from it.
I don't see how the school's charging money for tickets would break that portion of the license. The school charges money from students to enroll in its courses, so the school is already making money from the use of the software. Plus, the license states that a student can make a personal income from their use of the software as long as it's part of a school internship or apprenticeship.
