[SML] Wiggle wood for a cannon?

I like the sonotube idea to make the barrel of a gun, but I think that I
would cut 3 or 4 plywood ribs. Then use 1x2 battens that are tight at the
small diameter and spaced apart at the large diameter. I would then wrap
the barrel in muslin and glue/paint the hell out of it  to get it smooth.
Wiggle wood would be alot of money and would fight you along the taper.
I love all these ideas being put forth for a fairly common
technical challenge.
