Yes. I just had to talk someone out of getting one in Wisconsin. Much as it can be great it also requires more knowledge and resources than most HS have available. They thought it would be a “cheap” cyc.
(I may have even been the first person to use one on a HS stage... just realized that... anyone know of a HS show that pre-dates 2017 for LED wall on stage? I used one for RAGTIME at a HS in the Milwaukee area)

I feel the proliferation of LED screens (big, modular ones) and the advancement of their weight and technology (and price) we're not far from seeing LED screens replacing cycs in theatres of all sizes, including high schools.  I wouldn't be surprised if there were already high schools in Texas that have them.

Regarding ultra-wide projectors, be aware that the image is VERY sensitive to any movement of the screen. And if the screen is not perfectly flat, that can distort the image significantly.  For clouds in the sky, that may not matter, but for some it may be a problem.
The use of projectors has a MAJOR effect on the lighting design.  If you ignore that fact, you are likely to wash out your image. Another factor, is that if your lighting is fairly bright, the eye adjusts for that, and the image will appear dim .
Also, projector technology has been a rapidly developing technology in recent years. 4K is starting to be common, and the Laser and LED light sources have been getting brighter. So, rental becomes an option if you want the latest technology.  Another aspect is that older projectors drop in price.  800x600 resolution projectors, even with over 2,000 lumens, are almost being given away. And they may be suitable for some effects, such as projecting onto a window.
