The set-up. I have two spaces. The older (38 yrs) main stage is 2”x3” sleepers on 3/8” permacushion pads with 2” x 6” T & G pine top from the proscenium line on up. The apron replaces the pine with ¾” ply and 26/32 maple on top.

The newer black box has ¼” double tempered hard board on two layers of ¾” ply on 2”x4” sleepers on ¾” Masonite “Super W” pads.

Both on a concrete slab. We don’t have traps.

The problem: The older floor is no longer level, the pine is basically flaking away as we pull up tape. All the T & G sound broken but we re-inforce joints twice a year with dowels at an angle. The dance department no longer uses the dance
floor because they have included tap and refuse to use a dance floor that can take heavy tapping. So they dance on the bare floor. The theater department is allowed to screw in but not paint the deck. The floor is failing and needs to be replaced.

In the Black box, the theatre dept can screw into the deck but must pre-drill but still leaves those puckering holes.

I’m afraid if I have the flooring replaced to a subfloor with hard board on top, we would be spending a lot of time fixing puckered holes after theater arts uses the space.

My quandary is: Do I replace with a T & G soft wood floor that is forgiving and patchable or replace it with the hard board floor?

We use the facility for absolutely everything the college and community can throw at us because we are the only facility in the area with a staff.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
