The second shot shows an old wood block and fall with an open hook which is not in the previous shot. My guess he has a harness and safety line under his costume. Old rigging might be added and safety gear taken out in post production. While it looks sketchy, that is obviously the point of the shot in the film. That is how our forefathers built the world, minus the safety gear and knowledge we have today.
