cable guide, and pins. We run a continuous 3/32" cable from the pull
source, a 3" stroke cylinder in most cases through the brackets to a
bungee or spring a the far end. When needed it is easy to put a sheave
in the system to turn corners. We bend pins from hanger wire and put a
split ring and a 12" (generally) piece of cable on them. The tail gets
secured to the drive cable with a 1/4" shaft collar. This makes it
simple to set the pins, retract the cylinder, put the end of the pin
against the block and secure. The split ring goes over the drive cable
to keep pins from hanging down. The 12" cable give you plenty of
flexibility to work on one point without affecting the others. Over the
years it has proven to be a very flexible and reliable system.
I have never been able to find a good solenoid but have seen people use quick release rigging hooks to do the actual holding of the drop and use a solenoid or pneumatic cylinder to pull the pin. (See below). I have always resorted to home made manual pin release drops out of a c-clamp, piece of plywood or steel city, some eye screws or bolts and pinwire attached to tie line. I built a set of these 20 years ago and have been using them ever since.
