On the serious side, I think arts takes longer and you have to focus earlier in life on it. I started in 6th grade, went to college with a career in arts in mind, and it worked out. Getting me into a top grad school was one important way. That said, at least where I am in the world "college is only for career training" is absolutely the prevailing thinking among those who set the policy and approve the funding.</div><div><br></div><div>There's a lot of "college is a business, our product is our students, and their future employment is the sole measure of our success" language in the halls of the politicians (and in our own administration) in my state.
