Exterior grade plywood (AC) will hold up better over time than lauan but with more weight & pronounced grain. A solution that helps with durability and hiding grain is to coat the plywood with Jaxsan or a similar acrylic-based roofing material. It can be
over-painted or have paint mixed in and can last for a long time* outside before it finally succumbs - I used a piece of scrap Jaxsan-coated lauan scenery to patch a roof in VT until I could repair some missing slates. Painting both sides and paying attention
to edges and seams will extend that.</div>
