It is possible. Years ago (probably 80s or 90s) both the Minnesota Opera and the Minnesota Children's Theatre used such a system in their touring program. As they said, You could set it up in a parking lot. No overhead support necessary.

Subject: [SML] Truss Systems
Hello Everyone,
I am looking for some recommendations for companies that I should reach out to for a design and fabrication of a ground supported truss structure. I am not quite sure if what my company would like is even possible, but I am looking to have a conversation with a company about what is possible. We are basically working in a space without the ability to support anything from overhead.
Thanks for all your help,
Nate Wheatley
